Kent County Opens New North County Campus, Centralizing Operations for the Sheriff's Office, and Increasing Access to Health Services

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (June 1, 2023) - Kent County held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house today for its new North County campus, located at 4191 17 Mile Rd NE in Cedar Springs. Its brand-new 30,000 square foot facility will house a full-service sub-station for the Sheriff's Office, a public health clinic for the Health Department, and additional space for other County services as needed.

"We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of our new facility, where we provide top-notch service to our rapidly growing community," said Kent County Board of Commissioners Chair Stan Stek. "With this new building, we are able to offer even better access to the resources and care that our residents need to thrive."

The Sheriff's Office North Substation will replace its previous location in Kent City and continues to serve an area of over 290 square miles which includes the townships of Algoma, Courtland, Nelson, Oakfield, Solon, Sparta, Spencer, and Tyron; City of Cedar Springs: and the Villages of Kent City and Casnovia. Additionally, it is equipped with updated technology to improve service delivery.

"This move will help provide essential resources for our staff and will help coordinate services from the Sheriff's Office in Northern Kent County," said Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young. "This provides much-needed space and a central location for easy access."

The connected public health clinic is also an upgrade from its former location in Rockford and will create the opportunity to offer expanded public health services. It will provide immunizations, administer the Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC), and operate a Personal Health Services (PHS) clinic.

"This is an exciting time for the County and our Northern residents," said Kent County Health Department Administrative Officer Adam London. "The opening of this new clinic will offer a broader range of services and alleviate the need for residents to travel for care."

The facility also features a large meeting space for trainings, meetings and events, hoteling space for additional county departments to meet with residents, and a staff fitness room.

Funded by the County's Capital Improvement Program in January of 2020, the total cost of the project was $13.1 million. Kent County contracted with DLZ Michigan Inc. for architecture and engineering and Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. for construction.

"We can't wait to welcome residents to our new facility, and we look forward tomaking public safety and health care more accessible," concluded Stek.

The facility is open to the public effective June 1, 2023. The new health clinic is open for appointments Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the 2^nd and 4^th Thursday of each month. The Sheriff North Office is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
