Bera, Meeks Call For Continued Support for Democracy and Accountability in Burma Two Years After the Military Coup

WASHINGTON, DC- Today, Representatives Ami Bera and Gregory W. Meeks issued the following statement marking the two-year anniversary of the military coup in Burma:

"Two years ago, the Burmese military overturned the will of the people and thrust the country into a violent humanitarian and political crisis. Since the coup, the junta has unleashed a campaign of torture and repression that has destabilized the country and undone years of progress. We condemn the atrocities committed by the military, which include the killing of over 2,800 civilians and the wrongful detention of over 13,000 elected officials, journalists, activists, and others. We call upon the junta to immediately cease engaging in violence, release all political prisoners, and come to the negotiating table with the National Unity Government, Burma's ethnic communities and armed organizations, and other political stakeholders.

"The United States has long championed democracy, rule of law, and human rights in Burma, and we are proud that The President signed into law, the BURMA Act to hold the junta accountable and strengthen efforts to provide humanitarian assistance and support to the Burmese people. We continue to stand with the brave people of Burma as they strive to create a path back to democratic governance, and look forward to working with the Biden Administration and the international community to support democracy, inclusivity, and peace in Burma."
