Pedestrian Tunnel to Riverside Park Closed Indefinitely

The pedestrian tunnel leading from North State Street into Riverside Park has been closed and will remain inaccessible indefinitely, as construction gets underway soon on a large housing project in the surrounding area.

The former Super 8 motel will be demolished, and the development will encompass that site as well as the field to the east that formerly held tennis courts and a skate park. The pathway to the tunnel would take pedestrians right through the middle of the work zone, so it had to be shut down.

Pedestrian traffic from south of Interstate 76 to Riverside Park is encouraged to use the existing sidewalk on North Main Street under the freeway to access the park.

The housing development is being done on behalf of Cargill, which plans to invest some $40 million to provide additional housing for its employees and the community. The North State project will provide 108 new dwelling units of various types.

This work will also encompass reconstruction of North State Street and other road improvements.

Another housing project consisting of single-family homes and also supported by Cargill is expected to begin construction this summer in the area north of Gateway Avenue just east of South Main Street.
