SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, Calif. June 09, 2023 - Fire staff have completed ignitions on the 2023 Ash Mountain Prescribed Burn. Combined acreage from prescribed burning and fuels reduction using non-fire methods is 39.5 acres for this project.

Firefighters from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks were joined by crews from CALFIRE and Tulare County Fire on the 2023 Ash Mountain Prescribed Burn. Prescribed burns offer valuable opportunities to share resources, skills, and knowledge across jurisdictions under non-emergent conditions.

The Ash Mountain Prescribed Burn is conducted most years to reduce the fast-growing and fast-drying grasses around roads and infrastructure in the hot and busy foothills area of Sequoia National Park, which will help to reduce the hazards of potential accidental fire starts throughout the summer. This is especially important this year, as following a very wet winter these fine fuels have grown in abundance.

Pockets of smoke or active flame may remain visible within the burn area for several days. These may be visible from the road. Please utilize caution in or near areas that show evidence of burning and be mindful of any signage or directions from staff.
