Minister Martin congratulates Irish Golden Globe award winner Cillian Murphy

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin TD has today congratulated Cillian Murphy on winning the coveted title of Best Actor in a Motion Film at the 81st Golden Globe Awards in The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Minister Martin said: "This award for his title role in Oppenheimer is a wonderful and well-deserved recognition of the immense talent of Cillian Murphy. Since his debut in Disco Pigs, he has shown himself to be a master of his craft and has secured his place for many years now as one of Ireland's foremost and best-loved actors; and this year's Golden Globes success serves to secure his place in the history of film and among the very best in the world."

Minister Martin also congratulated Irish actors Barry Keoghan and Andrew Scott for achieving their nominations in the same category for their roles in Saltburn and All of Us Strangers, respectively.

Poor Things, co-produced by Ireland's Element Pictures, also won 2 Golden Globes including Best Film, Comedy or Musical. Minister Martin congratulated Irish producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, as well as Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan.

Minister Martin said: "2023 was a hugely successful year for Irish film production and Irish talent. I hope this Golden Globe award is a portent for further success and acclaim for the large pool of talent existing in the Irish film industry."

She added: "The increase in the Section 481 Tax Credit Cap from €70m to €125m should enable the industry to entice even more productions to Ireland where they have access to outstanding talent both behind and in front of the camera. The raising of the cap should lead to further achievements in all sectors working in film including animation and VFX."
