Old Mutual hosts special spring day ride ahead of go2berg race4 September 2024

With the highly anticipated Old Mutual go2berg race fast approaching, participants and cycling enthusiasts gathered for a special Spring Day training ride to fine-tune their skills and soak in the camaraderie that defines this premier event. The training session, held under the clear, early September skies, offered a blend of exhilarating trail riding and social bonding at the picturesque Thaba Trails-a hidden gem in the heart of Johannesburg.

"The Old Mutual go2berg is a 6 and half day mountain bike stage ride through the Free State and into the Drakensberg, in KwaZulu Nata, and highlights Old Mutual's commitment to showcasing the natural beauty of our country and, more importantly, supporting the surrounding communities." said Hannes Smith, Chief Executive of Old Mutual Iwyze.

The Spring Day ride was therefore more than just a practice session; it was a celebration of the vibrant community that has grown around the go2berg race and challenged riders' physical and mental endurance. Participants, including Kaya959 journalist Tsikwe Molobye and Managing Director for Thaba Trails Wendell Bole and Hannes Smith amongst many others, cycled together through the scenic trails, enjoying the landscapes and the invigorating challenge of the course. The event was also a testament to the unifying power of cycling, bringing together people to share their passion for the sport.

As riders cycled the trails, they were treated to refreshing drinks, adding a festive touch to the day. The event allowed everyone to mingle, share stories, and forge new friendships, all while building anticipation for the upcoming race.

In a heartwarming gesture that truly embodies Old Mutual iWYZE's ethos of "Doing Great Things Every Day," Hannes Smith facilitated a special announcement during the event. Recognising Tsikwe Molobye's passion for cycling and his dedication to his craft, Smith revealed that Wendell from Thaba Trails would be sponsoring Tsikwe with a state-of-the-art mountain bike for the go2berg race. This sponsorship, facilitated by Old Mutual iWYZE, underscores Old Mutual's commitment to supporting local talent and making a positive impact in the community.

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Tsikwe Molobye expressed his deep appreciation for the support. "My bike was giving me quite a bit of trouble during the ride and I was worried about how I'd manage during the race and to have Wendell from Thaba Trails sponsor me with this incredible bike is beyond anything I could have imagined. This isn't just a bike; it's a symbol of the belief that Wendell and the Thaba Trails team have in me, and that belief fuels my determination to give this race everything I've got." Tsikwe further added. "Their support has taken a huge weight off my shoulders and now I can focus entirely on enjoying the race".

Hannes also shared his thoughts on the decision to facilitate Tsikwe's sponsorship and said, "At Old Mutual iWYZE, we are passionate about empowering people to reach their full potential. Tsikwe's enthusiasm for cycling and his commitment to excellence made him an ideal candidate for our support. I was glad to facilitate the arrangement with Wendell to ensure Tsikwe is fully equipped for the race. We're thrilled to play a part in his journey, and we look forward to seeing him conquer those trails."

Thaba Trails, often described as a slice of paradise within the bustling city, provided the perfect backdrop for this preparatory event. Nestled within the 450-hectare Thaba Eco Park, the trails offer breathtaking views of the Klipriversberg range and a surprising variety of wildlife, making it an ideal training ground for both amateur and seasoned cyclists. Known as the home of Johannesburg's toughest and most beautiful mountain bike trails, Thaba Trails has long been a favourite among go2berg riders, many of whom have honed their skills on its challenging terrain.

As the Spring Day ride came to a close, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for the go2berg race. The event not only provided valuable training but also strengthened the bonds within the cycling community. With just under two weeks to go before the main event, the riders are more prepared than ever, buoyed by the support of their peers and the inspiring generosity of the Old Mutual Iwyze team.
