Putnam and Greene Counties...
Georgia DOT to Host a Public Information Open House for State Route 44 Widening and Improvements Projects

Greene and Putnam -The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will host a Public Information Open House (PIOH) for the proposed widening and improvements of State Route (SR) 44 in Greene and Putnam counties on Tuesday, May 7 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Putnam County Administration Building, 117 Putnam Drive, Eatonton, GA 31024. The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public with an opportunity to review the proposed projects and provide feedback.

The communities surrounding SR 44 in Greene and Putnam Counties are projected to experience significant increases in population and development likely to result in heightened traffic volumes which is predicted to surpass current capacity. Georgia DOT is seeking public feedback on proposed projects that directly address this burgeoning growth while working to enhance safety for existing and future motorists and pedestrians in the area.

The SR 44 widening and improvements project proposes to widen approximately 10.5 miles of SR 44 from Old Phoenix Road/Harmony Road to Athens Tech Drive/(Proposed) East Greensboro Bypass from the existing two-lane road to a four-lane road. The project is proposed to be completed in three phases to begin over the course of consecutive fiscal years to manage the rising cost of construction. In addition to the widening of the SR 44 corridor to address growing traffic volume demand, the project offers several safety and accessibility improvements including:
  • Intersection improvements including roundabouts.
  • Improved access to businesses in the area.
  • Upgraded bridges at Lake Oconee, Richland Creek, and Little Creek, I-20.
  • Sidewalks with improved Americans with Disability Act access and bicycle access.
  • Enhanced safety by reducing turning conflicts at intersection.
Georgia DOT is committed to proactively planning and providing opportunities that encourage public participation throughout the transportation project delivery process. To learn more about the SR 44 widening and improvement project, citizens are encouraged to review the project's webpage.
