WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced today the Department of Transportation will award $172,813 to the Green River Area Development District (GRADD) to help the group develop a comprehensive road safety action plan.

Senator McConnell helped secure this funding by supporting the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which established the Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program that funds today's award. He also wrote directly to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to advocate for GRADD's grant application.

Senator McConnell led the IIJA to Senate passage two years ago and the President signed the bill into law. That legislation will give Kentucky billions of dollars over five years to improve the Commonwealth's roads, bridges, railroads, riverports, airports, broadband, and more.

Today's grant will allow GRADD to develop a road safety action plan in conjunction with the Kentucky Transportation Center at the University of Kentucky. The group plans to analyze crash data from its seven-county area to create a list of future projects that would make travel safer for all users and streamline future grant applications.

"The seven counties included in the Green River Area Development District form an integral part of Kentucky's transportation infrastructure. That importance will only grow if drivers can count on safe, reliable driving throughout the region. I supported the bipartisan infrastructure law in part to help Kentucky expand its role in America's transportation network and am confident the studies funded by today's grant will help the Commonwealth do so," said Senator McConnell.

"This Safe Streets for All grant will make roads safer across the entire GRADD region. From recreational walkers to freight haulers, everyone will benefit from the data being gathered and the safety projects we'll be able to seek," said Tom Lovett, GRADD's MPO Director. "We appreciate the work of Senator McConnell in helping us secure this federal grant and for all he does for the region."
