Bike and Pedestrian Improvements Project - College Avenue/Green Street

The City continues towards the completion of the College Avenue at Green Street Bike and Pedestrian Improvements Project. This project, once completed, will provide bicycle and pedestrian improvements on College Avenue by relocating the existing traffic signal currently located at Kirkwood Avenue to the intersection of College Avenue at Green Street. On Wednesday, June 12, the traffic signal on College Avenue at Green Street was activated and is now operational. The traffic signal located at Kirkwood Avenue has been covered up and will be scheduled for removal. The project is currently nearing completion as intersection improvements at Green Street have been completed with regard to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements. Green Street has received curb extensions, count-down pedestrian leads, hands-free push buttons to activate the pedestrian crossing, video detection and pedestrian lead timing.

The City's contractor has begun work towards completing the required work at Kirkwood Avenue. The work at the intersection of College Avenue and Kirkwood Avenue includes the reconstruction of the existing ADA ramps (including curb extensions similar to the new construction at Green Street) and the removal of the existing traffic signal poles. Once this work has been completed, the contractor will return to repave and restripe the affected roadway. This roadway paving work will consist of a 2-inch grind and 2-inch placement of rubberized asphalt. Due to the availability of the asphalt material required for the overlay part of this work, grinding and overlay activities have been re-scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday, June 24, and June 25. College Avenue and adjacent streets from Arrow Highway to south of the railroad right of way will remain open during these activities. Driveways within this limit and up to 200 feet on east and west Green Street and Kirkwood Avenue will also remain open. East and west Green Street, Kirkwood at College, and the driveways within the paving limits will only be temporarily impeded or blocked while grinding and paving activities are being performed at those locations. Once paving is complete, roadway striping will remain in a temporary condition with reflective tabs delineating the roadway until the final striping is placed.

No Parking signs will be posted 72 hours in advance of the start of this work and notices are being hand delivered by the contractor to residents by end of Friday, June 21, updating nearby residents of the modified schedule. All work has been coordinated with the Claremont Unified School District. This project is expected to be completed by the end of June 2024.
