The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the decisive action taken by the SAPS in Limpopo, where a 43-year-old sergeant has been arrested in connection with six murders, allegedly carried out since 2019. This arrest follows a lengthy investigation that has linked the officer to a disturbing series of insurance-related killings, where she is accused of fraudulently benefiting from life insurance policies and funeral plans taken out for her victims.
This case, if proven, highlights a shocking breach of public trust and a disgrace to the SAPS uniform. The fact that some of the victims were physically or mentally disabled makes the allegations even more chilling.
We commend the SAPS for their commitment to holding their own accountable, as this arrest is part of a broader effort to clean up the ranks. Recent actions, including the arrest of eight officers in Cape Town on extortion charges, signal an encouraging trend towards rooting out corruption and criminal behavior within the police force. These efforts are crucial in the long road to restoring public trust in law enforcement.
The DA urges the Police Minister and National Police Commissioner to continue this momentum in weeding out corrupt elements within the SAPS. A professional, capable police service - free from those who abuse their power - is essential for the safety of all South Africans. We will monitor this case and others closely to ensure that justice is served and that the integrity of the SAPS is restored.
