DALLAS -
At Dallas ISD, speaking another language is a superpower.
At Dallas ISD, speaking another language is a superpower.
"It's an opportunity to create a group of bilingual future employees that are able to navigate language and cultures," Edwin Flores, trustee for District 1,said.
One way school officials are investing in students' ability to learn and speak a second language is through the newly installed book vending machine at the Margaret and Gilbert Herrera International Welcome Center. Representatives attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the welcome center to unveil the newest book vending machine.
Made possible through a partnership with the Dallas Education Foundation and Superior Text, the vending machine will be fully stocked with multilingual titles available to all who visit the welcome center.
"Books open the doors to a child's imagination - and more importantly - to a brighter future," said Regina Montoya, board member of Dallas Education Foundation.
The vending machine is more than a piece of equipment, said Elizabeth Casas, deputy chief of special populations for Dallas ISD.
"It symbolizes hope, opportunity, and the possibility of a brighter future for our children," she said. "By providing them with access to literature from the moment they enroll and register in our district, we are empowering them to embark on a journey of self-discovery, imagination, and lifelong learning."
The center, located at 9400 North Central Expressway, is a one-stop shop for families looking to enroll in Dallas ISD.
Welcome center employees help register children for the next school year, they also offer parent registration, language proficiency testing, and health screenings. For the 2023-2024 school year, the welcome center registered over 7,000 students from 76 countries, speaking over 36 languages.
"We hope the book vending machine will be a symbol to families that the love of literacy starts at home," said Amanda Clymer, director of Dual Language ESL.
When students see books written in their mother tongue, and in the languages they hope to speak, they realize opportunities are endless, said Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde, Ed.D..
"Today, we no longer see speaking Spanish as a deficit. It's not just an opportunity, it's another talent. It can be a superpower," she said. "It's not just Spanish, it's any language."

DALLAS - En Dallas ISD, hablar más de un idioma es un superpoder.
"Esta es una oportunidad para formar un grupo de futuros empleados bilingües que saben tratar con diferentes idiomas y culturas", dijo Edwin Flores, representante del Distrito 1.
Una manera en que los funcionarios escolares invierten en la capacidad de los estudiantes de aprender y hablar otro idioma es con la nueva máquina expendedora de libros del Centro Internacional de Bienvenida Margaret y Gilbert Herrera. Se celebró una ceremonia de corte de listón en la que se reveló la recién instalada expendedora.
Gracias a una colaboración con la Fundación Educativa de Dallas y Superior Text, la expendedora estará surtida con títulos multilingües disponibles para todos quienes visiten el centro.
"Los libros abren las puertas a la imaginación, y, lo que es más importante, a un futuro más brillante", dijo Regina Montoya, integrante de la mesa directiva de la Fundación Educativa de Dallas.
Es más que una simple máquina, dijo Elizabeth Casas, jefa adjunta de poblaciones especiales en Dallas ISD.
"Representa la esperanza, las oportunidades y la posibilidad de un futuro mejor para nuestros jóvenes", dijo Casas. "Al brindarles acceso a la literatura desde el momento en que son matriculados en el distrito, los ponemos de camino al autodescubrimiento, a la imaginación y al aprendizaje de por vida".
El centro, ubicado en 9400 North Central Expressway, brinda ayuda a familias que desean inscribir a sus hijos en Dallas ISD.
Los empleados del centro no solo matriculan a los jóvenes para el próximo año escolar, sino que también ofrecen orientación a los padres, evaluaciones de conocimiento de idiomas y exámenes de salud. Para el año escolar 2023-2024, el centro matriculó a más de 7000 estudiantes de 76 países que hablan más de 36 idiomas.
"Esperamos que la máquina expendedora de libros sea un símbolo para las familias de que el amor por la lectura empieza en casa", dijo Amanda Clymer, directora de Lenguaje Dual ESL.
Cuando los alumnos ven libros escritos en su lengua natal, y en otras que esperan hablar un día, ven que las oportunidades son infinitas, dijo la superintendente Stephanie S. Elizalde, Ed.D..
"Hoy ya no vemos el hablar otro idioma como señal de deficiencia. Además de ser una oportunidad, es un talento. Es un superpoder", dijo. "Y no solo español, sino cualquier lengua".
