*UPDATE* MURDER INVESTIGATION – 1600 BLOCK OF GAVIOTA AVENUE

Homicide detectives have arrested the suspect responsible for the April 15, 2024murder of Nelson Martinez Gonazlez, a 30-year-oldresident of Long Beach.

Through their investigation, detectives identifiedAhmed Mahmoud, a 41-year-old resident of Long Beach as the suspect. He was booked for one count of murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, one count of illegal possession of ammunition, and one count of evading arrest. Bail is set at $3,100,000.

Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration.

Homicide detectives are investigating a murder
of a male adult that occurredon April 14, 2024, in the1600 block of GaviotaAvenue.

At approximately 8:47 p.m., officers responded to the 1600 block of GaviotaAvenue regardinga shooting. Upon arrival, officers locateda maleadult victim suffering from a gunshot wound to hisupper body. Officers renderedmedical aid and attempted life saving measures until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel, who transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injury.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene. Through their preliminary investigation, detectivesdetermined anunknown male suspect approached the victimon foot and shot him,which ultimately resultedin the victim's death. The suspect fled the scene prior to the officers'arrival.

While clearing the scene,officers observeda possible suspect vehicle inthe area. Officers attempteda felony traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle failed topull over leading to a department-authorized vehicle pursuit. The possible suspect stopped his vehicle near the 1700 block of Pacific Coast Highwayand fled the scene on foot. Officers establisheda perimeter around the area and activated the SWATTeam.

SWAT officers locatedand arrested the male suspect for an unrelated no-bail arrest warrant and transported him to the Long Beach City Jailfor booking. His involvement in the murder, if any, remainsunder investigation.

The victim has been identifiedas NelsonMartinez Gonzalez,a 30-year-old male resident from Long Beach.

Detectives believe the victim was interactingwith the suspect prior to theshooting, however, themotive for the shooting remainsunder investigation.
