Pianist Hyunsoon Whang to be joined by violinist Destiny Ann Mermagen and cellist Michael Mermagen for “Trio Barn Burners”

Cameron University's Dr. Hyunsoon Whang will be joined by nationally renowned violinist Destiny Ann Mermagen and cellist Michael Mermegan for "Trio Barn Burners." During the concert, they will perform trios by Haydn and Dvorak as well as Paul Schoenfield's Café Music. The concert takes place on Sunday, April 7, at 3 p.m. in the University Theatre.

Tickets purchased at the door are $10 for adult and $8 for senior citizens, members of the military and non-CU students. Praised by the Kansas City Star for her "out of this world playing and welcoming and friendly demeanor," pioneering musician and American violinist Destiny Ann Mermagen is the first artist, alongside pianist Heather Adelsberger, to record and release the complete works of Henri Vieuxtemps' "Bouquet Américain," a collection of witty and virtuosic pieces based on familiar folk melodies, written in the classical music tradition with a charming nod to American fiddling. These works are featured on her 2018 premiere album, "Classical Cowgirl: Bach to Barn Burners™." As the winner of international competitions and performance awards, she has appeared as violin soloist and chamber musician in prestigious venues around the world.

Cellist Michael Mermagen is a professor of cello at UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. For more than 25 years, he has served as Artist Faculty and Chamber Symphony Principal Cellist of the Aspen Music Festival and School. He has toured and given recitals, concerto performances, master classes and chamber music performances around the world, and currently performs nationwide with the Aspen String Trio, formerly the ensemble in residence at the University of Baltimore. With that ensemble, he has recorded "Music Martinu," an upcoming release for the Naxos label. Mermagen also recorded and performed the "Patrick Zimmerli Piano Trios" for the Arabesque label, after a celebrated debut of the same pieces at Seattle Chamber Music Society.

Whang began her piano studies at the age of four and has been performing publicly for more than 40 years in hundreds of concerts. Highlights of her performances this season include solo and chamber music appearances in Cleveland, Kansas City, Jacksonville, Salt Lake City and Reykjavik. Most recently, she was a guest artist on Kansas Public Radio's live broadcast of Valentine's Day Concert in Lawrence. She especially enjoys playing for audiences in her home state of Oklahoma. She was a featured artist at the Oklahoma Arts Conference last fall. A dedicated educator, Whang has taught and nurtured generations of students. She is a recipient of the Oklahoma Governor's Arts in Education Award and a member of the Cameron University's Faculty Hall of Fame.
