ESA approves Norwegian measures to control and eradicate salmon fluke

The EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) has today approved Norway's updated eradication program for Gyrodactylus salaris.

ESA in July 2021 approved Norway's national measures to eradicate the salmon fluke (Gyrodactylus salaris). The parasite also known as the salmon killer lives on the body surface of freshwater fish. At the time, ESA approved eradication programs for certain rivers where the parasite had been found while the rest of Norway was approved as disease free.

Norway has since reported successful completion of eradication programs in several rivers. Norwegian authorities have also reported that the parasite have been detected in two new rivers.

ESA has assessed updates provided by Norway and is satisfied that the measures taken are necessary and appropriate to control the spread of the parasite. The measures are therefore approved, and the list of areas in Norway subject to an approved eradication programme has been amended accordingly.

ESA has approved the following rivers as free from Gyrodactylus salaris:

  • Troms county: Skibotn River, Signdals River and Kitdals River.
  • Nordland county: Leirelva, Ran River, Drevja, Fusta, Vefsna, Hundåla, Halsan River, Hestdals River, Dagsvik River and Nylands River.

ESA has approved two new rivers to be added to the eradication programme:

  • Møre and Romsdal county: Gyle River.
  • Buskerud county: Ebbestad River.
