Renew Europe meets in Rome to promote a pro-European path

The pan-European Renew Europe political family convened in Rome last week to meet with partners and citizens, following similar events in Poland and Spain. The visit reinforced the Renew Europe family's conviction to promote a true pro-European path in the political centre and defend against political extremism.

During the visit, a seminar discussed the challenges facing Italy and the European Union; in particular the reforms needed to build a stronger Europe, a new economic approach to deliver a competitive green transition and fair European solutions to migration and asylum challenges. Renew Europe believes a stronger, reformed European Union is best placed to deliver on the expectations of the Italian people.

The seminar gathered Renew Europe political allies, including: Azione, Italia Viva, ALDE Party member Più Europa and Liberali Democratici Europei with one strong message: we need a centrist reformist force in Europe.

Speaking from Rome, Stéphane Séjourné MEP, President of Renew Europe said:

"The destiny of Italy and the European Union are intertwined. The European Union was constructed on the dreams of great Italian thinkers, from Altiero Spinelli to Alcide De Gasperi. To build the Europe of tomorrow, a pro-European, centrist political force in the European Parliament will be crucial. The Europe of 2050 will be built from the political centre, not by extremists."

"Our aspiration is a strong Italy at the heart of a united and sovereign Europe. We need the efforts all pro-European forces in Italy who want more than the false sovereignty of the far-right and the extremism on the far-left."

Commenting on the floods that have hit Italy, President Séjourné said:

"The whole of Europe has followed this crisis with deep concern. Our thoughts are with the Italian people. Europe reacted swiftly to the flooding in Italy under the leadership of Renew Europe's Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič. Equipment has been mobilised from Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia and this shows we are stronger together when tackling climate related disasters."

"As well as action to halt climate change, we need real European solidarity when dealing with its consequences. Renew Europe will continue to call for stronger European resources that can be deployed for natural disasters. Italian families now need investment to rebuild and European solidarity must play its role."
