Ascension Saint Thomas West continues pioneering advanced surgical care in Nashville as the first hospital in the city to receive the cutting-edge da Vinci 5 (dV5) robotic surgical system. This next-generation technology significantly enhances surgeons' capabilities, providing more precise and minimally invasive procedures.
"As the home of the nation's leading cardiac robotic surgery program, we are proud to bring the latest in surgical innovation to Nashville," said Harrison Kiser, vice president of Saint Thomas Heart and COO of Ascension Saint Thomas West. "These advancements are a key reason why more patients throughout Middle Tennessee trust us for their heart care. The da Vinci 5 system will enable our thoracic, urologic, and general surgeons to perform even more precise and effective procedures, ultimately improving patient outcomes and recovery times."
The dV5 builds on its predecessors, which has been used in more than 7 million procedures globally since its release in 2014. The da Vinci 5 system incorporates over 150 enhancements designed to optimize surgical performance and patient safety.
Key features of the new system include:
Dr. John F. Lazar, Chief of Thoracic Surgery, shared, "The technological advances in the dV5 will have a major impact on surgery, especially in lung and cancer surgeries. Patients will experience safer procedures, reduced operative times, and better outcomes, making a significant difference in their recovery and overall health."
Ascension Saint Thomas West Hospital will use the da Vinci 5 for a variety of robotic-assisted procedures, including thoracic (chest), cardiac, colorectal, general, and urologic operations. Additionally, the cardiovascular surgery fellowship and general surgery residency programs at Ascension Saint Thomas will utilize the dV5, ensuring that graduates are trained in cutting-edge robotic techniques and are prepared to provide innovative and exceptional care to their patients.
