FOSI Statement on Kids Online Safety Act

Congress should not attach the Kids Online Safety Act to the FAA reauthorization bill for the following reasons:

1. It is not germane to the bill. Legislating the protection of kids online is extremely important and it should not be rushed into a bill that is not remotely connected to it.

2. There remains significant differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill and those differences need to be thoughtfully addressed and worked out.

3. KOSA has not passed through the committee stage in the House, providing further reason not to rush the passage of this bill.

4. While there have been some important improvements to the bill, more work needs to be done to overcome troubling aspects and unintended consequences, particularly surrounding access to vital information for LGBTQ+ youth and other marginalized communities.

5. Congress should focus on passing a comprehensive, federal online privacy bill first and then consider specific online safety legislation such as KOSA.
