ALDE Party member Venstre in Denmark formalised their new leadership and lead candidate for the European elections in 2024 at a party Congress on 17-18 November.

Troels Lund Poulsen, Denmark's Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Minister of Economy, was elected as party chair after taking up the role on an interim basis since Jakob Elleman-Jensen stepped down in October.

Lund Poulsen addressed over 1,500 members in a keynote speech with Stephanie Lose, who was elected deputy party chair, and stressed that the two will work in synergy to ensure the party's revival and growth.

"Right now our party is challenged. And there is no magic solution that we can just pull out of a hat. Instead, we must show the Danes, through results, stability and hard work, that they can be safe in giving the Liberals their vote," said Lund Poulsen in his intervention.

Members also elected Morten Løkkegaard MEP, Vice-President of Renew Europe, as Venstre's lead candidate for the European elections in 2024.

Løkkegaard, who was the party's lead candidate for the last elections in 2019, was first elected as MEP in 2009 and has been representing the party in the European Parliament for the last three parliamentary terms.

"We must have more liberals in Denmark. We must have more Denmark in Europe. And we must really have more Europe in the world. Now let's go out and fight that battle - I'm looking forward to fighting it with you," Løkkegaard told the party Congress.

Other top candidates on Venstre's electoral list include Asger Christensen MEP, Ulla Tørnæs MP, and Marianne Lynghøj.

An ALDE Party delegation led by co-President Senator Timmy Dooley attended the Congress as part of Venstre's international programme, which included a lunch reception to discuss upcoming issues in the European liberal agenda.
