GCI donates $2,500 to Polynesian Association of Alaska in support of Tongan relief efforts

January 26, 2022

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - GCI announced today a $2,500 donation to the Polynesian Association of Alaska supporting Tongan-Alaskans whose family members have been impacted by the Tongan volcano eruption and tsunami.

"We know that many GCI employees and customers have loved ones in Tonga. As an Alaska company with almost 2,000 employees across the state, we wanted to help," said Chief Communications Officer Heather Handyside. "It's difficult to be here in Alaska knowing that family thousands of miles away may be struggling. We're happy to be able to support relief efforts."

The donation to PAOA will help support the financial assistance needed to purchase satellite phones, portable tents, flashlights and demonstrates GCI's ability to provide rapid support during emergencies.

"Being a good neighbor is an important part of our company values, which means being able to respond to unforeseen circumstances and natural disasters that happen throughout the year," said Contributions and Events Senior Manager Megan Mazurek.

GCI is one of Alaska's leaders in corporate philanthropy, donating approximately $2 million each year in cash, products, and connectivity to organizations across the state. GCI is committed to giving back to the communities it serves and provides employees with 16 hours of paid leave to volunteer with local organizations. In 2021, more than 460 GCI employees volunteered over 4,400 hours with local non-profit organizations across the state.
