Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Enforcement Measures for Vehicles with Lapsed Road Tax

07 May 2024In Parliament

Mr Dennis Tan Lip Fong asked the Minister for Transport

a. how does LTA track actual usage of vehicles whose owners have failed to renew their road tax, beyond checking records and sending reminders; and

b. what efforts are being made to ensure that such vehicles are not being used on the roads.

Reply by Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat:

1. LTA deters the use of such vehicles on the roads by conducting regular enforcement patrols and operations. LTA enforcement officers actively impound such unlicensed vehicles.

2. Errant vehicle owners will also be in contravention of Section 15 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, and imposed with strict penalties, when they are found to have been keeping or using a vehicle without valid road tax. A person who is convicted of such an offence is liable to a fine not exceeding $2,000 or a fine of an amount equal to three times of the tax payable, if it is proven that the person had the intention to evade payment of the tax.
