thyssenkrupp drives forward decarbonization of emission intensive industries at COP28

thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies has signed today two projects with Fujairah Cement Industries (FCI) and Gulf Biopolymers Industries Ltd (Gulf Biopolymers), both based in the United Arab Emirates. The partnerships are aimed at decarbonizing energy intensive cement production and building up biopolymer production capacity in the MENA region. thyssenkrupp has bundled key technologies for the decarbonization of the industry in its new segment Decarbon Technologies. Announcing these milestone projects during COP28 is proof for the strategic importance of this green industrial powerhouse. The industrial sector is the world's second largest emitter of CO2, but also holds the levers for bold and deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. thyssenkrupp wants to play a proactive role in realizing this decarbonization potential through new partnerships on a global scale.

thyssenkrupp Polysius and FCI will test the deployment of alternative fuels to reduce CO2 emissions in cement production. Polysius has developed a new combustion chamber technology that allows fossil fuels to be completely replaced by green alternatives, thereby reducing emissions and operating costs. Fujairah Cement Industries owns the largest cement plant in the United Arab Emirates.

The contract between thyssenkrupp Uhde and Gulf Biopolymers encompasses a Basic Engineering Package (BEP) and a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) package for the establishment of a large-scale biopolymer plant on the Arabian Peninsula. The biopolymer will be derived from renewable biomass sources, is biodegradable and has a substantially lower carbon footprint compared to synthetic polymers, made from fossil fuels. Biopolymers from this plant canbe used in a wide range of applications like packaging, textiles and hygiene supplies. The plant will be the first large biopolymer plant in the MENA region.

As an enabler of the green transformation, thyssenkrupp intends to play a proactive role at the world's largest climate conference. With a diverse team of senior executives and experts, the company wants to share expertise and deepen collaboration with public and private sector partners in various formats - from its own high-level event on decarbonization enablers and participation in the UNFCCC, German pavilion, and business partner programs to the launch of new projects.

With global mitigation efforts falling short of the Paris agreement goals, much remains to be done to keep the 1,5-degree goal alive. The energy and hard to abate sectors have a key role to play, as they hold big levers for bold and deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

thyssenkrupp's greatest impact lies in enabling the green transformation of the industry - a theme at the heart of COP28. As one of the today largest single CO2 emitters in Germany, thyssenkrupp is actively working towards replacing CO2 intensive production processes with climate friendly technologies. The company has already started the green transformation in its steel business and is building its first direct reduction plant, one of the world's largest industrial decarbonization projects.

But thyssenkrupp goes beyond decarbonizing its own operations. The company is also helping its customers to meet their climate targets through its recently created Decarbon Technologies segment which brings together key technologies to scale up wind power, green hydrogen and green ammonia, a transport medium for green hydrogen and green cement.
