The second annual Montreux Jazz Festival Miami kicked off last night, a perfect beginning to a weekend of music that was designed to create one-time-only musical moments. The sold out festival continues tonight, at The Hangar at Regatta Harbour, in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood. Jon Batiste & Friends headlined Friday night with a 20-piece band and surprise guests that included JoJo, Lauren Daigle, Maxwell and Matteo Bocelli. Trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and opening act Justin-Lee Schultz and others joined Batiste as well. Batiste closed his set down with what he refers to as a Love Riot, a parade with his band through the audience. WILLOW also performed a full set before Batiste. Batiste returned to the stage at midnight for what has become a signature element of the young festival: a late night improvised jam with a stage full of musicians collaborating together that lasted nearly two hours. Special guests Shania Twain and Lauren Jauregui joined the jam to sing, in addition to JoJo, Daigle, Maalouf, Schultz and over 30 other musicians. In between sets by Justin Lee-Schultz and JoJo, The Palm Beach Lakes Community High School Ram Regiment Band performed throughout the festival grounds, and Dante's HiFi vinyl bar, based in Wynwood, DJ'd throughout the evening.
