City Council on Tuesday amended an agreement with United Way of Tarrant County for a community liaison to help increase the number of agencies that are funded to address crime and safety priorities.

The bottom line: The increase of $125,000 raises the contract's total to $174,920 per year for the Police Department.

Some background: The Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD) is funded by a ½-cent sales tax designated for crime control, crime prevention and public safety. As part of the City's efforts to implement crime prevention efforts, the CCPD Board approved using funds for competitive grants to 501(c)3 organizations that provide services with a measurable impact on crime and safety.

The goal of the community liaison is to increase the number of funded agencies that address crime and safety priorities. The community liaison would:

  • Meet with and educate community stakeholders about CCPD funding
  • Map community crime- and safety-related resources
  • Serve as co-chair of Partners with a Shared Mission, an expert review panel
  • Advise on community partnerships
  • Coordinate messaging campaigns for CCPD grants under the direction of the Police Department
  • Survey community stakeholders on crime and safety problems and the community's capacity to respond
