Short track train passenger service coming back for 2024

Port Alberni, BC - The City, along with Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society (WVIIHS), will be entering an agreement to bring back short track passenger service on the Alberni Pacific Railway for the 2024 operation season.

At the April 22nd Regular Council meeting, Council directed staff to enter into a one-year agreement with WVIIHS to operate the short track passenger train for a one year term. Passenger train service will operate from the Train Station between APD Sawmill and Dry Creek, a distance of approximately 1.3 kilometres, starting in mid-June.

"The resumption of trains on this short track is great news for the residents and visitors of the Alberni Valley and for the growth and expansion of the Harbour Quay and Uptown areas," said Willa Thorpe, Director, Parks, Recreation and Culture. "At the direction of Council, the City will continue to work with WVIIHS to assess the economic viability of a longer-term, permanent solution to passenger rail in the Valley."

Decisions on potential long-term rail-related activities and related infrastructure improvements have been deferred until the completion of the business and feasibility planning project is complete to ensure the long-term viability and success of future passenger rail service.

This decision amends the City's 2024-2028 Five Year Financial Plan to include $113,935 in the capital budget and $60,000 in the operating budget with funding from Reserves.

"We are very excited to put the Alberni Pacific Railway (APR) 'back on track' for 2024, showcasing the beautiful Port Alberni Waterfront. The APR has been a unique, educational experience visitors and locals have been missing for many years, and now we are returning with a new plan to showcase the waterfront's heritage," said Richard Spencer, Manager, Alberni Pacific Railway.

Construction will get underway May 1st to repair the track at Athol Street and Harbour Road to allow the train to operate this summer season. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to use Dunbar Street or Argyle Street as an alternate route while construction is underway.
