Niagara University Marketing Professor Recognized for Innovative Teaching by Mid-Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration

Dr. Shawn Daly, director of student global experience and professor of marketing and international business at Niagara University, accepts an Innovation Teaching Award from Dr. Vana Zervanos, associate dean of the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph's University.

Dr. Shawn Daly, director of student global experience and professor of marketing and international business at Niagara University, received an Innovation Teaching Award from the Mid-Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration at its 2023 conference, Oct. 1-3, 2023, at the Stevens Institute of Technology School of Business in Hoboken, N.J. Dr. Daly was recognized for an upper-level undergraduate marketing management course that incorporated the use of ChatGPT into classroom activities, giving his students an inventive way to engage with a rapidly emerging technology.

During the course, Dr. Daly and his students participated in AI-assisted brainstorming activities and used traditional marketing management principles and emerging prompt engineering rules to curate the ChatGPT outputs that would most likely be successful. The curation framework provided a structured methodology for the students to learn how to effectively filter, organize, interpret, and present AI-generated content.

"By teaching hands-on skills in curating chatbot content, students learn to navigate the disruption caused by AI," Dr. Daly said. "As AI becomes prevalent in business contexts, professionals must know how to critically evaluate AI outputs and present them effectively to various audiences. Curation can harness AI's capabilities while mitigating its limitations, organize information in a way that's coherent and meaningful for the audience, and present it in a more digestible, relevant, and engaging way. Teaching students about AI and chatbots through the lens of curation could help them navigate and make sense of the digital world."

The winner of two Fulbright scholarships, Dr. Daly has lectured extensively on medical tourism, business-to-business marketing, and business education throughout Europe and Asia. He has published and presented over 50 papers, including one of the most commonly cited articles in the Journal of Marketing Education. He has held positions as dean of Niagara University's College of Business Administration, dean of the Business School at Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio, and dean of the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. He has also taught at Villanova University and Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., and worked in R&D engineering with a multinational chemical firm and in marketing management of a laboratory instrument manufacturer. He holds a Ph.D. in international business from Temple University, an M.Ed. in religious education from Loyola University, an MBA from Villanova University, and a B.S. and M.Eng. in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech.

The mission of Mid-Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration is to promote and improve collegiate education for business in all areas within the jurisdiction of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
