New games area and fitness equipment for Whiteditch

Work to install £200,000 of games and fitness equipment as part of a major improvement project for Whiteditch open space in Oakridge is under way.

Funded by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council from developers' contributions, the brand-new multi-use games area for football and basketball, two table tennis tables and street fitness equipment is expected to be completed in April.

It is part of an improvement project to the open space area which has already seen a new perimeter footpath, seating and picnic tables installed, tree and wildflower planting undertaken and a natural area with logs and stepping stones created to improve the biodiversity within the area.

The final phase of the project, which will be delivered later this year, will include new litter bins and eight new sculptures that have been chosen by pupils of Oakridge Junior School. The sculptures will be placed in the natural areas of the site later in the year.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Residents' Services Cllr Laura James said: "Investing in and improving free outdoor spaces like this to support residents' wellbeing is a key priority for the council. This area is well used and the improvements for the whole project cater for a wide range of ages and interests from informal football and basketball games to enjoying nature and outdoor exercise. We have already received positive feedback on the work completed including the perimeter footpath and I hope these new facilities will be well received and enjoyed by all."
