STATEMENT FROM NYSDOT REGION 10 DIRECTOR RICHARD CAUSIN

There is nothing we do at the Department of Transportation more important than keeping our workers safe. In this regard, a new pilot program was launched - the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program - which is another tool being utilized to get motorists to slow down and further protect our workers.

The State Department of Transportation is aware of outside social media posts and viral messages containing misinformation regarding the locations of the cameras and other aspects of the program.

As early as next week, NYSDOT will be posting an official list of these cameras' daily locations online at www.ny.gov/workzone. All other lists that are circulating are inaccurate as these locations on Long Island can change by the day.

A few other aspects of the program of importance to the traveling public:

  • Speed cameras are only in active work zones when highway workers are working. They are not running around the clock and are attached to an SUV - they are not permanent fixtures.
  • For the first 30 days of the pilot, speeding motorists will be issued warning Notices of Liability, with actual Notices being issued 30 days after the initial rollout. Net funds generated from this program will primarily be reinvested into worker safety initiatives because safety is, and always will be, our top priority.
  • More information, including statistics on Work Zone safety, can be found here.
