The Ambassadors of the European Union (EU): Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain, are undertaking a visit to Mwanza on 24 to 26 January, 2023.

They will meet the local authorities, visit development projects funded by the EU and by its Member States, visit the Nyanzaga gold mine and an artisanal mine. They will also have the opportunity to meet Members of Parliament from the region, representatives from the civil society including academia, NGOs, religious leaders, private sector and members of the press.

Highlights of the trip include visits to:

  1. The Lake Victoria Water Supply and Sanitation Project, an overall (€ 136 million - TZS 343 billion) project developed through a partnership between the Government of Tanzania, the EU, AFD and the EIB implemented by MWAUWASA to improve Water Supply for the region. The Ambassadors will also learn about the support provided by VEI to MWAUWASA.
  2. The Fisheries Education and Training Agency (FETA) and the activities planned and implemented through EU funding to support the sector in the Lake Victoria in partnership with FAO and the Belgian Development Agency;
  3. Visit of Sabasaba sports ground, built by Germany funded and promoted Sport Charity Mwanza. Ambassadors will play netball with girls from Sabasaba secondary school.

The visit follows the visit that the EU Ambassadors made in the Southern Highlands in 2021 and shows their commitment to a stronger and more coordinated cooperation of the EU and its Members States (known as Team Europe) with Tanzania also at local level. Team Europe is well present in Mwanza with several joint cooperation initiatives and the city is a partner of the recently started "Green and Smart Cities SASA Programme", a new EU funded (€ 75 million - TZS 190 billion) programme implemented in Mwanza, Tanga and Pemba in partnership with other EU Member States Agencies like the French AFD, the Belgian ENABEL and the German GIZ.
