The Next Wilmington Art Loop Opens Tomorrow, Friday, June 2

Fifteen venues located in and around Wilmington are set to participate

Welcome to the Other Side by Kiara Florez

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki, City Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz, and Jerry duPhily of Out & About Magazine invite City residents and art lovers from around the region to the next Art Loop Wilmington of 2023 tomorrow, Friday, June 2. The popular FREE art exhibition, now in its 35th year, is a partnership between the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs and Out & About. Galleries in and around Wilmington will participate in this month's Art Loop. A complete list can be found in the June issue of Out and About.

Patrons are encouraged to take advantage of the Art Loop shuttle provided by the City of Wilmington Parks & Recreation Department. The shuttle will leave the parking lot of The Delaware Contemporary, located at 200 South Madison Street, at 5:45 p.m. In addition to the featured venues, shuttle riders vote for their choice of galleries to visit.

Wilmington's Redding Gallery, located at 800 North French Street, continues to present "Out of This World," an exhibition featuring the art of Kiara Florez, an illustrator who works primarily in acrylics and inks. She explores spiritual thinking and imaginative worlds, using bold colors and wavy lines to express these concepts. Since taking drawing seriously at the age of 16, Kiara's works have always aimed to create stories and play with vibrant colors to develop her unique style. The Redding Gallery will host an Art Loop reception on Friday, June 2, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. featuring light refreshments.
The other featured establishments in June include The Delaware Division of the Arts' Mezzanine Gallery, The Delaware Contemporary, Gallery at Grace Church, Spaceboy Clothing, and the Delaware Center for Horticulture.

The Delaware Division of the Arts' Mezzanine Gallery, located on the second floor of the Carvel State Office Building at 820 North French Street, is pleased to present Patterns for Saturn, a selection of new work by Individual Artist Fellow in Works on Paper, Aaron Terry, that runs through July 28. The Mezzanine Gallery invites you to an opening Art Loop reception on Friday, June 2, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Terry, a Wilmington resident and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art & Design at The University of Delaware, created site-specific work for the Mezzanine Gallery -- a series of screen-printed fabric wall hangings that provide a contrast to the hard surfaces and neutral palette of the building.
Aaron Terry's work dances between sculptural, sonic, and printed materials that present visual allegories of personal politics embedded in the color, flash, and cadence of today's rapid-fire media parade. His work grapples with finding "truth" in a sea of today's excessive media.
Patterns for Saturn considers the importance of dreamlife: time spent outside of lived reality. This includes a loose sense of meditation: time spent shaking off contemplation and frustration with today's crushing sense of political and cultural hooliganism. Abstract patterns and a soundtrack blanket the walls of the gallery, to remove the viewer from the space: the Carvel State Office Building in Wilmington. This is both a respite from and a comment on the architecture and atmosphere of state and governmental buildings in general. The visual patterns and sounds produced in the space are meant to provide a space for escape, contemplation, and meditation.
Terry's work has been seen in ten solo exhibitions and over 30 group shows, as well as a half-dozen murals and installations. He is a member of Philadelphia's Vox Populi artist collective. In 2022, Terry received a Delaware Division of the Arts Fellowship in Visual Arts: Works on Paper.

Dream by Gard Jones

Next Friday, June 9, The Delaware Contemporary, located at 200 South Madison Street, launches its summer 2023 exhibition series Radius, a collection of seven unique and concurrent exhibitions organized by five teams of curators. Each exhibition delights the viewer with interesting conversations provoked through innovative juxtapositions between exhibiting artists and exhibition themes. Offering diverse applications of processes and practices, these six exhibitions collectively define a radius around authenticity -- authenticity in practice, in tradition, in training, in materials and in self. Each asks us to more closely examine truths, explore origins, and challenge meaning.
"Radius" defines a circular region from a center point of origin. For its upcoming summer exhibition season, The Delaware Contemporary serves as the center point of origin, with a radius encompassing the 250 miles surrounding Its Riverfront Wilmington home. This Is the first exhibition season entirely dedicated to showcasing artists who live and work within The Delaware Contemporary's radius. The exhibits run through August 27, 2023. The kickoff celebration is Friday, June 9, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and will feature Brandywine Valley SPCA pet adoptions, a summer kick-off balloon drop at 6 p.m., Dance4Life presentations, music by DJ Skinny White, from Hummingbird Island Cuisine and beach time bar specials on Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA and Orange Crush cocktails.

The Gallery at Grace Church, at 900 North Washington Street, is pleased to present the Together Apart Group Exhibition featuring Vivienne Cameron, Niki Rose Chester, Ann Grewal, Katherine LeCocq, Barbara Levitt, Charley Parker, Jen Polillo, Adira Riben-Jenner, and Carol Meisner Roethke.
Since its inception in 2016. Virtual Open Studio has had many homes. Originally started as Museum programming by Jen Polillo, former Director of Education at The Delaware Contemporary, then run out of Polillo's home, and most recently transitioning to an online format due to the Covid-19 pandemic gathering restrictions. Jen's mission was to provide the time and space for local artists to come together to make art and build community.
In person, artists would have been in every corner of the room, painting a still life set up alongside others working on independent projects, enjoying each other's company and real-time feedback. Online, they meet weekly via Zoom using a private Facebook group to have discussions, post in-progress work, provide and receive constructive criticism, and support one another.
This community has been a vital source of inspiration, accountability, and most importantly a point of connection for the participating artists represented here. What started as artists making art together has become artists, apart, making art together. The public is invited to an Art Loop reception tomorrow, Friday, June 2, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Spaceboy Clothing, at 706 North Market Street, is proud to sponsor Brain Wave on Friday, June 2, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. with the goal of bringing together the local music and art community in a unique and inspiring event. Spaceboy aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment where artists can showcase their talent and connect with their audience, while patrons can enjoy the music, art, and culture of the community. In addition to the music, local artists will be displaying their work throughout the store, creating a visually stunning and immersive experience for all attendees. This event, free and open to the public, will not only showcase the talent of local artists but also foster a sense of community and togetherness in Wilmington.
