Hillsborough County Celebrates Newspaper in Education Week

During itsMarch 1 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners declared March 6 through March 10, 2023 as Newspaper in Education Week.

Newspaper in Education is an international program that encourages students to use the daily newspaper as a valuable learning resource. Every year, the American Press Institute celebrates Newspaper in Education Week during the first school week in March. For over 40 years, the Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education [NIE] Program has partnered with Hillsborough County to serve educators, students, and families by providing them newspapers, companion materials, and instructional support.

Newspaper in Education Development Officer Sue Bedry accepted the proclamation for the Times' program, which has provided more than a quarter of a million print copies and more than 10 million digital editions of the Tampa Bay Times to classrooms across the Tampa Bay area. Bedry said that teachers use the newspaper as a "living textbook" to teach their students on its importance in daily life.

"They teach English, current events, economics, civics, science, health, and more," she said. "The goal of [the NIE program] is to build critical thinkers, lifelong readers, and productive and engaged citizens."

The Board of County Commissioners also presented two additional proclamations declaring March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Women's History Month, and a commendation recognizing the 2023 Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade.
