Dauphin County Commissioners Double Aid to First-Time Homebuyers

HARRISBURG (April 17, 2024) Dauphin County Commissioners George P. Hartwick, III, Justin Douglas and Mike Pries have approved an increase in assistance to first-time homebuyers by doubling the maximum level of support from $3,000 to $6,000.

"With our strategic investments in the First-Time Homebuyers program, we're doubling the maximum support to $6,000," said Commissioner Justin Douglas, who serves as the board liaison to the Housing and Redevelopment Boards. "This boost will empower more families in Dauphin County to turn their dreams of homeownership into reality."

In a related move, the maximum allowable liquid assets will be increased from $5,000 to $20,000 to align with responsible homeownership practices advocated by realtors.

To receive assistance under the First-Time Homebuyer program, applicants must meet income guidelines and complete an approved workshop to qualify. Household income cannot exceed 80 percent of the median income of Dauphin County.

"We as a board want to do our part to make the dream of homeownership a reality," said Commissioner George Hartwick, III, who has oversight of the Dauphin County Department of Community and Economic Development, which administers the program. "Becoming a homeowner is an experience that changes lives and changes communities It helps to bring safety, stability and a sense of pride to a neighborhood, and leads to transformation, one life and one home at a time."

"Scraping together a down payment for a home is one of the biggest obstacles for first-time homebuyers," said Commissioner Mike Pries. "This program can provide an interest-free portion of the down payment, and clear the way for home-seekers to become homeowners."

"By taking proactive steps now, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our constituents and set a precedent for impactful community investment," Douglas added.
