BOYLE STATEMENT ON TYRE NICHOLS VIDEO

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) issued the following statement upon the release of graphic body cam video that is part of the investigation into the death of Tyre Nichols:

"The recently released video of the fatal encounter between Tyre Nichols and Memphis Police is both shocking and difficult to watch. No interaction between law enforcement and the public should end in tragedy, as was the case in Memphis. This incident should be fully investigated with total transparency, so that any instances of failure to follow established protocols, regulations and laws on the part of law enforcement are held to the highest level of accountability. Tyre Nichols and his family deserve no less.

We are a society bound together and governed by laws. As the facts of this tragedy are explored in the days and months to come, we must remember that no one is above the law, and full accountability for one's actions, including those in law enforcement who protect our communities, must be our benchmark. Sadly, as we've seen too many times, the actions of a handful of officers taint the hard work and good intentions of so many others in law enforcement.

I offer my deepest condolences to the Nichols family, and I hope that the investigative process that is beginning to unfold will ensure accountability for this tragedy. I urge those who feel outrage and anger in this moment to express themselves peacefully and I hope that this horrible incident can provide an impetus for us to take meaningful steps to make tragic instances like this a thing of the past."
