The Boston Police Department Mourns the 4 Year Anniversary of the Passing of Officer Jose V. Fontanez

BPD Remembers: The Boston Police Department honors the Service and Sacrifice of Officer Jose V. Fontanez, on the 4 year anniversary of his passing. On Tuesday April 14, 2020, active-duty Boston Police Officer Jose V. Fontanez passed away due to complications from Covid-19. Officer Fontanez was a 29-year veteran of the BPD who was assigned to District E-13 (Jamaica Plain). Officer Fontanez received numerous commendations for his dedicated service during his career and was highly regarded by those he worked with, his supervisors and all who knew him.

Officer Fontanez's name is forever engraved at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. and can be located at Panel 30, East Line 33. His name is also etched on the Boston Police Heroes Wall inside Boston Police Headquarters as well as the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House.

In October of 2022, the Boston Police held a ceremony to honor Officer Fontanez's life, and a Hero Sign was placed outside of District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) where he worked. The sign is to forever honor the memory of a man who gave his life in service to his city. If you're in the area, keep an eye out for his Hero Sign and kindly take a moment, not only to honor his sacrifice, but to remember the loved ones left in mourning after his tragic passing three years ago.
