Glass bin collection dates now available

Residents with access to kerbside collections can now check when their new 120L purple-lidded glass recycling bin will be emptied for the first time.

Councillor for Environmental and Sustainability Jason Modica said Mildura Rural City Council's website had been updated to reflect the new schedule once the service commences in July 2024.

"It's really easy for households to check their bin collection dates online," Cr Modica said.

"Simply visitwww.mildura.vic.gov.au/myneighbourhoodtype in your address and all your bin collection dates will appear.

"This search tool will also show you different services, playgrounds and parks that might be around your area - so it's a great function, especially if you're new to the area."

Cr Modica said delivery of the purple bins was completed in April 2024, with more than 25,000 delivered to households across the municipality.

"Residents who are yet to receive their new glass recycling bin should contact Council to let us know," Cr Modica said.

"The introduction of a fourth kerbside bin - a mandatory requirement for all Councils under State legislation - will ensure more materials are transformed into new and useable materials, including being used in local road projects.

"This is a vital step in reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill due to contamination. Audits show that on average, 38% of the mixed yellow-lid recycling bin is glass by weight.

"The introduction of a fourth bin for glass will create more room in households' yellow recycling bin, meaning more cardboard and plastic can be recycled."

Cr Modica also moved to clear up some confusion regarding whether broken glass jars and bottles can be put in the new glass recycling bin.

"It is okay if a glass bottle or jar breaks when you place it into the bin and it's ok to also put clean, accidental broken bottles or jars in as well. Leave the glass containers whole where possible, otherwise this may make the bin too heavy for collection," he said.

"All other types of broken glass or glass materials should be placed in your red-lid rubbish bin. You can find out more about what can and can't be put in each bin on our website, or by contacting our Waste Education Officer.

"In the meantime, households are encouraged to continue to use the current three-bin system as normal."
