AUG. 5, 2021 - The U.S. Census Bureau today releaseda report summarizing 2019 e-commerce statistics on shipments, sales and revenues from key sectors of the economy: manufacturing, wholesale, services and retail. These statistics are available dating back to 1999.

The estimates in this report are based on data from the Census Bureau's Annual Survey of Manufactures, Service Annual Survey, Annual Retail Trade Survey, and Annual Wholesale Trade Survey. These surveys provide a broad perspective of e-commerce activity across several sectors.

Highlights:

  • Total e-commerce shipments of U.S. manufactures were $3,887.6 billion in 2019, down 2.1% from a revised $3,969.9 billion in 2018.
  • E-commerce shipments were 67.8% of all manufacturing shipments in 2019, up from 67.4% in 2018.
  • Revenue from electronic sources for service industries in the United States was $1,295.3 billion in 2019, up 13.0% from a revised $1,145.9 billion in 2018.
  • Revenue from electronic sources was 7.6% of total revenue for service industries in 2019, up from a revised 7.1% in 2018.
  • Sales from e-commerce for U.S. retailers were $578.5 billion in 2019, up 14.3% from a revised $506.1 billion in 2018. Total sales increased by 3.0% to $5,411.0 billion in 2019 from a revised $5,253.0 billion in 2018.
  • E-commerce sales were 10.7% of total retail sales in 2019, up from a revised 9.6% in 2018.
  • Total e-commerce sales for merchant wholesalers in the United States (including manufacturers' sales branches and offices) were $2,873.1 billion in 2019, up 2.9% from a revised $2,793.0 billion in 2018.
  • E-commerce sales were 33.3% of total merchant wholesaler (including manufacturers' sales branches and offices) sales in 2019, up from a revised 32.4% in 2018.
