Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital completes emergency room update and expansion project

COAL TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital unveiled its updated and expanded emergency room (ER) recently to better serve the Shamokin area and surrounding region. The updated ER is now nearly doubled in size than the previous unit.

"This project is an investment in the continued care and health of our community," said Michael Morgan, administrative director of Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital. "The newly renovated ER offers a technologically advanced, aesthetically pleasing environment conducive to providing the highest-quality emergent care. We couldn't be more pleased with what the improvements offer our local community members and surrounding areas."

The project, which began in the fall of 2021, repurposed existing space in the Shamokin hospital to expand the ER, taking it from nine semi-private exam areas to 19 private care areas. A new five-bed rapid evaluation unit also is now available to quickly treat patients with less severe injuries and illnesses that don't require highly specialized care.

The expansion also allowed laboratory and imaging areas, including a new computed tomography (CT) machine, to be updated and relocated closer to the ER to improve processes and patient flow for quicker and more efficient care.

This project is the latest investment in the Shamokin area to make it easier for people to get the right care they need in the right setting. The health system opened a Geisinger 65 Forward Health Center in Coal Township in 2021. The program is specifically designed to meet the care needs of people age 65 and over.

Geisinger also opened a ConvenientCare walk-in clinic in Mount Carmel in 2020. It offers care for minor health issues that can be resolved in a single visit, including cold and flu symptoms, allergies, earaches, tick removal, sprains and minor cuts.

"Many of our neighbors depend on our hospital for their care," Morgan noted. "Updating and expanding our ER better accommodates the number of people who come here each year. We know this project, along with the other Geisinger facilities in our community, will help all our patients when they need us."
