Dan Wakin joins Times Opinion

Over the past few months Dan Wakin has been an invaluable partner to me as well as a generous colleague to all. He came onboard to provide editing support to Opinion's international team and I am now excited to share that he will be joining us full-time as my deputy.

Dan effortlessly stepped in, pursuing ambitious Opinion journalism from around the world. From working on our Israel-Gaza war coverage to keeping readers attuned to the latest developments in the Vatican, Dan quickly came to play a key role in our international report this fall. His leadership was invaluable in publishing this gorgeous package of essays composed of thinkers, political leaders and experts on their vision for a path forward in Gaza. He then collaborated with Opinion's audio team to record three of the essays for listeners, broadening the audience and reach of the work.

Dan brings to Opinion a two-decade career as a reporter and editor at The Times. In Obits, he led the project "Those We've Lost," a chronicle of the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic; he was a deputy editor of the Culture desk, overseeing the daily report and international coverage; and he's also been deputy editorial director of NYT Global. As a reporter, he covered stories in two dozen countries in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America, including the New York Philharmonic's visit to North Korea and the death of Pope John Paul II.

In 2022, Dan took a break from journalism to work as senior director of communications at the Metropolitan Opera. A graduate of Harvard University with a degree in the classics, he is an avid amateur clarinetist and a co-founder of the chamber music collective Hellgate Harmonie.

Welcome to Times Opinion, Dan! We are delighted to have you.
