Providers and staff who care for patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)/Substance Use Disorder (SUD).

Knowledge of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) options for patients diagnosed with OUD/SUD.

Goal of this Live Activity:

Educate primary care providers in the requirements necessary to become data waivered to offer MAT in the clinic setting and inform hospital and emergency department providers of the referral criteria for patients discharged from the hospital or emergency department.

Learning Objectives

· Review addiction as a chronic disease and how it alters brain function.

· Discuss medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and its use as a treatment option for opioid use disorder (OUD)/substance use disorder (SUD) and how MAT impacts brain function.

· Discuss rationale for primary care providers to be engaged in providing MAT to improve OUD/SUD outcomes in rural regions.

· Describe the steps necessary to become data waivered and implement early screening interventions in the clinic setting.

· Explore the process for implementing MAT in a primary care clinic.

· Explain the referral criteria for MAT and the referral process to link individuals to treatment upon discharge from the hospital or emergency department.

Speakers

Jason Jerry, M.D.

Jason M. Jerry, M.D., FAPA, FASAM, is a board-certified psychiatrist who is also certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio and completed his residency training at The University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida. He has devoted most of his career to the research and treatment of those addicted to alcohol or drugs. He previously worked for one of the largest privately-owned addiction treatment centers in Florida and ultimately became their Corporate Medical Director. Before coming to FirstHealth, Dr. Jerry was a staff psychiatrist at The Cleveland Clinic's Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center and an Assistant Professor at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He has been very involved in-patient advocacy work and served as the Chair of both the Treatment Subcommittee for the U.S. Attorney of Northern Ohio's Heroin and Opioid Task Force and the Addiction and Pain Committee for the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association. He was also a member of the Ohio State Medical Association's Focused Task Force on State Legislation. Dr. Jerry has published several peer-reviewed articles related to psychiatry and addictions and has received multiple awards related to his work in the field of addictions including the 2016 U.S. Attorney General's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Community Partnerships for Public Safety.

Karen Smith, M.D., P.A.

Karen L. Smith, M.D., native of rural Maryland, is a Family Physician with private solo practice in Raeford, NC. Upon completion of her Duke University Bachelor of Science degree in biology, Hahnermann University School of Medicine, and Duke FAHEC Residency training, she chose to start her professional practice in North Carolina. Dr. Smith became involved with the NC Academy of Family Physicians as well as the NC Medical Society where she served in all levels of the NCAFP to include becoming president in 2005 and currently serves as the delegate to the America Academy of Family Physicians. She has served the national organization as a participant and past chair of the commissions on Practice Enhancement and Quality as well as currently serving on the Governmental Affairs. She has served the state of NC with 13 years of service to the Division of Medical Assistance Advisory Board and the NC Institute of Medicine. Dr. Smith has served on numerous committees and boards throughout her career and most recently enhanced her participation dedicating services devoted toward the treatment of substance abuse disorders, healthcare reform initiatives, and onsite education experience for learners in healthcare. She worked with the Alliant Quality Improvement organization to engage and assist other doctors toward success with the Merit Incentive Payment System as part of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015. She served on advisory groups for the Office of National Coordinator and CMS Quality Payment Program as physician champion. She is engaged in global healthcare as demonstrated with direct support of mission work abroad but also support for the education and training of doctors worldwide. Dr. Smith is recognized as NC Family Physician of the Year in 2016 and American Academy of Family Physician of the year in 2017.

Joseph Gillham, M.D.

Joseph Gillham, M.D. earned his medical degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and completed his residency in family medicine at the National Capital Consortium, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. He served as chief resident during his final year of residency. Following medical school, Dr. Gillham served active duty in the military including time at Womack Army Medical Center, most recently as Family Medicine Clinic Officer in Charge. He recently retired from the Army. Dr. Gilham is a member of the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine, American Board of Family Medicine, Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians and American Academy of Family Physicians.
