From Rewards to Realisation: The Myburgh brothers conquer the Old Mutual go2berg30 September 2024

An inspiring tale of ambition, brotherhood, and the journey from novice cyclists to mountain biking enthusiasts.

Winning a competition can open doors to unexpected adventures, but for brothers Werner and Michael Myburgh, it led to the ride of a lifetime. Through their active participation in the Old Mutual Rewards program, they secured a coveted spot in the Old Mutual go2berg-a six-and-a-half-day mountain biking experience traversing some of South Africa's most breathtaking and challenging terrains.

Werner and Michael didn't just stumble upon this opportunity; they earned it by engaging wholeheartedly with the Old Mutual Rewards program. By completing a series of financial wellness activities-such as the Health Questionnaire, accessing their free credit reports, and using budgeting tools like the 22Seven app, they not only improved their financial well-being but also boosted their chances in the competition's lucky draw.

"We've always believed in taking proactive steps towards our financial health," Werner explained. "Participating in the Old Mutual Rewards activities was a no-brainer for us. The fact that it led to this incredible adventure is just the cherry on top."

Embarking on their first-ever mountain bike race, the brothers were both excited and a bit anxious. The Old Mutual go2berg isn't just a race; it's a journey through remote farms, rugged trails, and welcoming communities, emphasizing camaraderie over competition. Crossing the finish line with times of 35:06:40 for Werner and 35:09:11 for Michael, they were exhausted but elated.

"After today's uphills, I'm a bit drained," Michael admitted with a laugh. "But I feel incredibly accomplished after this week."

Werner echoed his sentiment. "These last six and a half days really tested us, but I'm glad our bodies handled it. The ups and downs were tough, but finishing feels amazing."

The journey wasn't without its challenges. "The lowest point was probably the relentless uphills," Werner recalled. "But the high point was definitely yesterday's downhills-the long drops and single tracks were pure exhilaration."

Michael shared his own experience. "Day Three was tough. We faced a big uphill and got cut off for the last 15 kilometers, which was disappointing. But those downhills made up for it. They were the most exciting part of the week."

As active members of Old Mutual Rewards, being Tier 5 status members, Werner and Michael have long understood the value of the program. They earn points not just for participating in challenges but also for maintaining good financial habits, like paying premiums on time and investing wisely. Members can move up the status rank based on the number of Old Mutual products they have.

As Tier 5 members, Werner and Michael also benefit from 100% free gym rebates, a valuable perk that helps them maintain their fitness year-round. This gym benefit, along with other wellness-related incentives like fitness bonus points, has allowed the brothers to stay in peak physical condition. It's just another way Old Mutual Rewards supports its members in achieving both financial and personal wellness goals.

"We use our Old Mutual Rewards points in various ways," Werner shared. "Sometimes we invest them back into Old Mutual products, other times we use them for purchases at partner stores. It's a flexible system that really adds value to our everyday lives."

Michael added, "The program encourages us to stay on top of our financial goals. The points are a great incentive, but the real benefit is becoming more financially savvy and secure."

When considering future participation, the brothers didn't hesitate. "If the opportunity comes around next year, we're definitely in," Werner said enthusiastically. "This experience has ignited a real passion for mountain biking."

Michael agreed. "This was our first race ever, and it's a huge accomplishment for both of us. We're hooked now."

Their story highlights how Old Mutual Rewards goes beyond traditional loyalty programs. By incentivizing good financial behaviour, it opens doors to experiences that enrich members' lives in unexpected ways. "Old Mutual Rewards gave us more than just points, it gave us an unforgettable experience and a new hobby," Werner noted.

Werner and Michael's adventure serves as inspiration for anyone looking to take control of their financial future while unlocking exciting opportunities. Old Mutual Rewards offers members the chance to earn points through activities like completing a Health Questionnaire, accessing a free credit report, speaking with an Old Mutual Financial Adviser, using budgeting tools like the 22Seven app, completing Moneyversity courses, taking the Money Personality assessment, and using the Savings Calculator. These activities not only enhance financial wellness but also provide additional entries into competitions like the Old Mutual go2berg experience.

The Myburgh brothers exemplify how proactive engagement with financial wellness can lead to extraordinary adventures. Their journey from participating in Old Mutual Rewards activities to conquering one of South Africa's most challenging mountain bike races is a testament to seizing opportunities and pushing personal boundaries.

As they look forward to future races and continue leveraging the benefits of Old Mutual Rewards, their story invites others to consider how small steps in financial health can lead to great rewards both on and off the trail.
