Purvis named SWCC athletic director

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) announced today Paul Purvis will be the college's next athletic director. He will begin his duties on April 30, 2024.

Purvis comes to Southwestern from Bellevue, Nebraska, with over 30 years of high school and collegiate coaching and administrative experience. As a student-athlete, Purvis played football for the University of Mississippi. After his playing days concluded, Purvis spent over 30 years teaching and coaching at the high school and collegiate levels. Most notably, he was part of the University of Tennessee football staff from 1997 to 2001 and won a national championship in 1998.

Having served as a coach, teacher, and athletic director, he understands the crucial role athletics plays in shaping the lives of young individuals and is committed to creating a championship culture.

Purvis explained, "I am enthusiastic about contributing to Southwestern's continued success and fostering an environment that nurtures the growth of student-athletes both on and off the field."

Lindsay Stoaks, SWCC president, said the college feels fortunate to have found a candidate with such an extensive background in athletics and experience in education.

"Paul's energy and passion for student-athletes and the student-athlete experience, coupled with his extensive experience in teaching, coaching, and leadership, impressed the search committee," Stoaks stated. "Paul's proven ability to lead championship teams and mentor student-athletes and coaches is exciting and we are looking forward to having him join our team this spring."

Purvis earned his master's degree from Delta State University and his bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi.

He will be moving with his wife, Christine, to the Creston area.
