Under the auspices of the WCO/JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Joint Project, the World Customs Organization (WCO) held a Refresher course for Master Trainers on Risk Management and Intelligence Analysis of East Africa and West Africa from 14 to 16 January 2025 in Brussels, Belgium.
Forty (40) Master Trainers from 11 Members in Africa, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, and Uganda, had a long-awaited reunion in Brussels. They became Masters Trainers in Risk Management and Intelligence Analysis in the late 2010s after completing the Master Trainer Programme (MTP). Subsequently, they have delivered training in their home administrations and beyond. Besides, they have contributed to improving risk management and information exchange in their regions by utilizing their expertise. The refresher course aimed to up-to-date knowledge and skills on the subject matter and enhance their expertise.
During the course, the Master Trainers had a high-level and motivational interaction with Mr. Ian Saunders, Secretary General of WCO, who encouraged them to strengthen their community and network of practice.
At the refresher course's opening, Mr. Ricardo Treviño Chapa, Deputy Secretary General of the WCO, highlighted with satisfaction the achievements of the Master Trainers who have significantly contributed to capacity-building activities in their regions, encouraging them to make the most of the refresher opportunity.
During the three-day course led by WCO expert staff from the Compliance and Facilitation Directorate, the Master Trainers were updated on the latest developments within the WCO in Risk Management. They also actively shared their experiences, challenges, and good practices in Risk Management, particularly in data analysis and information/data sharing. Notably, some Master Trainers, also WCO Accredited Experts, performed as lecturers in one of the sessions.
The refresher course was a vital step toward further achievements by the Master Trainers. The Master Trainers demonstrated the determination to enhance intra- and inter-regional cooperation, facilitated by active communication between the Master Trainers, to share challenges and good practices on Risk Management, thereby promoting mutual learning. They are resolved to actively engage in WCO activities and keep updated on the latest developments relevant to Master Trainers activities. This commitment will enhance their capabilities, for the further benefit of their home administrations and regions and the global Customs community.
