City's Community Development Block Grant and Rebuilding Together Thurston County Continue Making a Difference

In 2023, the City of Olympia's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program and Rebuilding Together Thurston County once again made a difference for low-income homeowners.

Founded in 2003 as an affiliate of the national Rebuilding Together organization, Rebuilding Together Thurston County, offers free home repairs and accessibility modifications to low-income homeowners and nonprofit facilities. Specifically, the organization serves low-income homeowners who are elderly or disabled or families with children or veterans in need. A recipient of the City's CDBG funds since 2021, Rebuilding Together Thurston County transformed a $75,000 award into six projects in 2023.

Lynne received a Rebuilding Day 2023 project. For that project, City CDBG funds were used in the fall to replace a failing drainpipe with nine plumbing leaks discovered and repaired at the same time. Rebuilding Together Thurston County also used City CDBG funds for electrical repairs, bringing her home up to code and restoring power.

Olympia receives federal CDBG funds from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a grantee. Funds are received annually through a formula allocation. In accordance with HUD, the funds are distributed to "develop viable communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment and opportunities to expand economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons."
