UNESCO supported Battambang to promote Creative Cities Network (UCCN)

During the workshop, the UNESCO Phnom Penh office provided an overview of the UCCN programme, its objectives, and examples of activities led by other Creative Cities, while Mr. Sophorn, Director of the Provincial Department of Culture and Fine Arts of Battambang, shared his experience on the preparation of the city's application to the previous cycle in 2021. Mr. Leang Veasna then presented current urban development projects in the city of Battambang.

Because Battambang is home to many cultural assets, from French colonial architecture and historical monuments to ancient temples, museums, and rich local cuisine, the city is planning on applying to the UCCN Secretariat in June 2023 to join the network as a Creative City of Gastronomy.

The two-day workshop ended with a developed nomination file receiving a variety of information about the potential creativity of gastronomy in Battambang city, while the nomination team strengthened their knowledge and understanding about the UCCN and the criteria for joining the network.

The results for the application of Battambang nomination will be announced on 31 October 2023 during World Cities Day. Other cities such as Kratie, Siem Reap, and Kampot, may follow for the next cycle in 2025 onwards.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN):

Launched in 2004, the Network aims at strengthening cooperation with and among cities that have recognized creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The network covers seven creative fields including Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music. By joining the network, member cities commit to sharing best practices and to developing partnerships with other cities to promote creativity and the cultural industries for the realization of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. As of today, the network comprises almost 300 member cities in around 90 countries.
