Sen. Jason Anavitarte Appointed Chairman of Truck Driver Shortages Study Committee

ATLANTA (May 31, 2023) | Today, Senate Majority Caucus Chairman Jason Anavitarte (R - Dallas) was appointed as Chairman of the Senate Study Committee on Truck Driver Shortages by Lt. Governor Burt Jones.

"Truck drivers are integral to the success of every industry in the state of Georgia amid growing workforce and supply chain concerns," said Sen. Anavitarte. "As we look forward to the next ten years, it is imperative that we recruit and train a large number of truck drivers to sustain our state's economy and maintain our status as a key national logistics hub. Not only do we need to assess current shortages along key logistics corridors in west and northwest Georgia, we need to recruit additional drivers to ensure our state is poised for future growth and success. I'm grateful to Lt. Governor Jones for entrusting me with this opportunity, and I look forward to working with my committee members to address these training and recruitment gaps over the coming months."

The Senate Study Committee on Truck Driver Shortages was created pursuant to Senate Resolution 155, sponsored by Sen. Anavitarte, which passed with bipartisan support during the 2023 Legislative Session. The American Trucking Association estimates that 1.2 million drivers will need to be recruited across the nation over the next 10 years to maintain and boost industry growth across all sectors. This study committee will be charged with hearing testimony from industry leaders and educators regarding strategies to meet this need in Georgia.

The study committee will hold meetings throughout the remainder of the year. The first meeting has not yet been announced, but once announced, it will be available to view on the Senate Schedule here.
