‘City of Festivals’ grants now available to support special events across city of Sacramento

The City of Sacramento is now accepting applications for grants from its two-year $700,000 City of Festivals program to support special events taking place across the city of Sacramento.

There will be four grant application rounds, with the first launching today. This first round of applications are being accepted through June 3 for events to be held July 1 through Dec. 31, 2022. An additional round will occur in fall 2022 and two rounds will be held in 2023.

Any individual or organization that would like to put on an event within the city of Sacramento may apply for the grant.

"Once again, we are putting our federal stimulus dollars back to work in our community," said Mayor Darrell Steinberg. "These grants will help build strong, healthy neighborhoods by bringing people together to enjoy family-oriented activities, art and entertainment."

"The goal of receiving federal American Rescue Plan funding is to make direct investments in the underserved parts of our city," said District 8 City Councilmember Mai Vang. "Allocating this funding equally between Council districts will allow us to support small-scale and neighborhood-specific celebrations of art, culture, and community in every corner of Sacramento."

To ensure distribution of resources and support for events throughout the city, $75,000 has been allocated to each council district area

To qualify, the special events must be consistent with family-oriented themes, support arts and cultural entertainment and activities, promote a healthier living environment and enhance the quality of life in the city.

The maximum grant award is $7,500. Grant funds may be used to pay costs incurred in connection with the special event, including City costs for police services, parking and permits, and other event costs such as private security, portable restrooms, and event fencing.

"The City of Festivals program will help respond to COVID-19's negative economic impacts while activating our great public spaces and adding new vitality to Sacramento neighborhoods," said Assistant City Manager Michael Jasso.

Funding for the City of Festivals program comes from the $8.2 million in American Rescue Plan Funds for small business priorities, which was approved as part of the Mayor's ARP spending framework.

The idea of providing financial support for events city-wide was a recommendation from the business workshops led by Councilmember Jay Schenirer in 2021.
