Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores | June 28, 2023 | Press Release
The Foreign Ministry is pleased to announce that yesterday, during the 11th meeting of States Parties to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (ICRMW), Dr. Edgar Corzo Sosa was re-elected to the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW) for the 2024-2027 term.
Mexico played a prominent part in the negotiation of the ICRMW. It also promoted its ratification and has pushed for the participation of independent Mexican experts on the CMW as an expression of its commitment to the Convention and to protecting the human rights of all migrants, regardless of their immigration status.
Edgar Corzo Sosa holds a law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM); a specialization in writs of amparo from the Institute for Legal Specialization of the Mexican Supreme Court; a master's degree in Comparative Public Law from the University of Paris I Pantheón-Sorbonne; and a doctorate in Constitutional Law from the Autonomous University of Madrid.
During his first term on the CMW, he served as both rapporteur and president. He increased the visibility of both the CMW and the Convention by organizing and participating in events held in various regions and within the United Nations; he strengthened relations with the rest of the UN Human Rights Committees by carrying out joint activities; and he fostered a constructive and close dialogue with States on monitoring their international obligations for the migrants' benefit.
Dr. Corzo will continue to promote the Convention and the work of the Committee on aspects of migration such as the factors that trigger migration, a gender approach, discrimination, and recognition of and respect for migrants' labor rights, while promoting a human rights-based approach to migration.
The Government of Mexico welcomes his re-election and wishes him every success in his second term.
