Washington, DC- House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul issued the following statement on new sanctions on Assad regime officials. Last year, Chairman McCaul and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Jim Risch sent a letter to Secretary Blinken highlighting the need to account for captagon revenues in a required report on the estimated net worth and sources of income of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad.

"It is good to see the U.S. and UK working together to counter the Assad regime and Hezbollah's dangerous role in narco-trafficking. Captagon is an addictive and dangerous drug that is bad for society and a cash cow for Assad and Hezbollah. The administration needs to keep up the pressure to counter this growing threat, including by making sure countries normalizing with Assad understand they are working with a drug lord."
