ThePresidentof theRepublic, Sergio Mattarella, released the following statement to celebrate Human Rights Day:

«Today marks the 75thanniversary of the approval of the Universal Declaration of Human Rightsby the United Nations General Assembly. Nowas then, the importance of that document consists in prioritizing the inalienable dignity inherent inindividual human beings over the exercise of power. This has enabled the construction of an international architecture based on respect for the fundamental rights and freedoms of every human being.

Italy has heartfeltlyjoined the celebration campaign promoted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, being aware that this important anniversary falls in a period characterised by serious and systematic violations of human rights and international humanitarian law that offend the conscience of the women and men of the world.

The recognition and the protection of the supreme value of human dignity enshrined in the Constitution constitutes an irrevocable necessity for the Republic, anywhere and at any time. Without human rights - universal and interdependent - there can be no liberty or justice, lasting peace, or sustainable development.

In the light of the challenges that characterise our times, it is our duty to reaffirm with renewed determination the principles that - regardless ofpolitical, economic, or cultural contexts - represent a moral obligation and a bulwark of civilization for us all. »
