Highland pupils’ performance makes appearance on Basque TV

Pupils and Teachers at Ardnamurchan High School have been delighted to learn that a song recorded by the school has been broadcast on Basque TV.

Head Teacher, Christopher Millar-Craig explained: "Our French Teacher, Sarah Druon was highlighting minority languages with our pupils and they recorded a song sung in Basque to celebrate the European Day of Languages.

"The performance was filmed, and the video sent to some of the media in the Basque country to get some feedback for the pupils of Ardnamurchan. Basque Radio interviewed Sarah and asked the school to play the song live for their audience.

"Following the interview, the managers at the radio station liked the initiative to promote minority languages and decided to play the video on their TV web channel."

The radio station emailed the school to say: "The professionals in charge of the program 'Hitzokei' of ETB1 considered that your initiative is very interesting, and they will make a small mention in the program that will be broadcast on November 9th."

Highland Council's Chair of Education, Cllr John Finlayson commended the school on their initiative he said: "The positive social, psychological and educational benefits of children receiving a bilingual education are well researched and documented. Ardnamurchan High School's support in celebrating the Basque minority language was a great way to further enrich the minds of our young people in their languages education."
