American Legion to Host USS Pierre Shipbuilder

The American Legion in Pierre will host Austal USA, the USS Pierre shipbuilder, on Tuesday, March 26.

"Representatives from the company will be here in Pierre to tour the community, meet with elected officials and the USS Pierre Commissioning Committee, and learn a little more about Pierre," said Pierre Mayor Steve Harding.

"Post 8 has graciously agreed to provide a public reception to the Austal delegation while they are in town."

Those interested in meeting Austal representatives and learning more about the USS Pierre and its commissioning process are encouraged to attend the event between 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion Cabin on Tuesday.

Larry Ryder, Austal USA Vice President of Business Development and External Affairs and Jessica Wofford, Events and Protocol Manager for Austal USA will also make a presentation before the Pierre City Commission during their March 26 meeting.

"The Commissioning Committee has been working with the Austal team for a couple of years now," said Mayor Harding. "We're excited to officially introduce them to Pierre and introduce Pierre to the project."

The USS Pierre, a Littoral Combat Ship, will eventually join the US Naval fleet to be used to protect and serve the country in near-shore efforts. There are three major steps in the shipbuilding process - the Keel Laying, the Christening, and the Commissioning. The Keel Laying, or the official start of the shipbuilding process, happened last summer in Alabama. The Christening, when the ship is put in the water for testing, is scheduled for this summer. The Commissioning, when the ship goes on active duty, is scheduled for 2025.

USS Pierre Commissioning Committee members include Mayor Steve Harding, Mike Mehlhaff, Jr., Eddie Hruska, Dennis Rounds, Chris Qualm, and Patrick Callahan.
